1 month old

Though it's only been a month, I honestly can't believe I am already writing about Lukah being 1 month old. (officially 1 month this past Wednesday when I wrote this post)

A few things I want to note:
--He was quickly out of the majority of his newborn clothes and diapers and is rapidly approaching being out of the 0-3 month clothes.

--I marvel every day at how much he's grown. It truly seems like he grows in his sleep each night. At his 2 week appt he was already 9.9 lbs! Despite my being thin, I make straight cream. That put him in the 90% for weight. He was 21 1/4 inches (though the nurse said she wasn't too accurate on that) which put him at 70%. And his head was in the 85%! Now at 1 month I can only imagine he's 12 lbs or more.

--With the large size comes great sleeps. Lukah is another great sleeper. He's currently only waking 2 times throughout the night and one of his stretches is for 5 hours. We're still working on a schedule but I've done a pretty good job of making sure he knows how to put himself to sleep.

--We feel like Lukah has been trying to smile for a couple of weeks, but on 9/25 he truly smiled for the first time.

--He has rolled over 2 times now from tummy to back though it is not consistent.

--He is a spitter upper. Neither of the other 2 were so this is new territory for us and definitely worth writing down.

--Lukah loves, loves, loves his brothers. And the adoration is mutual. We could not have asked for Kadyn and Kai to have accepted him in a more loving way. I'll be writing a post entirely on this another time.

--I have had to give up dairy. I hadn't been eating too much of it but around 3 weeks old Lukah had a few rough afternoons during which he cried for 2+ hours. I was fortunately able to correlate it to the dairy I had either for breakfast or lunch and since giving it up he hasn't had a problem since. That means I am not eating gluten, dairy, leafy greens, or tomato base. I am not giving up caffeine though!

--Another thing neither of the older 2 brothers had but unfortunately Lukah does is baby acne. Right around the 4 week mark he started to get it and now it's covering his face and neck. Boo.

First day of Kindergarten and Preschool

Kadyn AND Kai. That's what it's been for almost 4 years. Kai didn't know any different. Kai has done everything with his big brother. Everything. They went to the same preschool, were in the same swimming lessons, sleep in the same room, had the same summer camp...the list could go on and on. Kai very rarely "thought" on his own...whatever his brother wanted, or whatever his brother was doing, well, that is what Kai wanted as well. He is 3 going on 5. He is more coordinated than many 3 year olds so he can keep up with Kadyn. He is braver than many other 3 year olds so he can keep up with his older brother. He would often check what Kadyn's wants and needs are because gosh darn it, then that is what his wants and needs are too. He would also often check Kadyn's emotions to figure out how he was supposed to react to something. Kadyn AND Kai.

Interestingly, as the time approached to have a new baby in the house I was less nervous about that than I was about Kadyn starting kindergarten. I was afraid of how Kai would handle his brother being gone all day (Kadyn chose to go to all day kindergarten!). I was nervous that Kai therefore wouldn't want to go preschool. I was nervous that Kai would be devastated and not know what to do with himself. In my heart I knew that this was also one of the best things for Kai...independence; a chance for him to learn who HE is. Regardless, my heart broke for the change that was coming. My heart ached for how things would be different now between them. Would they remain such good friends?

At the same time my heart was aching for Kadyn. Did I mention my baby first born was already starting kindergarten?! Kindergarten. Such a huge milestone. He would be gone all day--9-3:30 M, T, Th, F and from 9-2 on W. Even though he went to preschool 3 mornings a week, I still felt I/we were able to have so much influence on him. But going to kindergarten initiates the decline in our influence. And, just as I knew in my heart that this was one of the best things for Kai, I also knew that this was one of the best things for Kadyn. He is ready to launch. He is ready to truly learn. But darn those pregnancy and post partum hormones.

Before Lukah was born I made sure to take Kadyn out to get school supplies and had both boys pick out a backpack and lunch boxes. They were also very excited to pick out their back to school outfits...and boy oh boy were they particular about their choices. We talked (or rather I talked at them) about how things were going to be different, what might be scary, what was going to be fun and excited, and most of all how we were still going to love each of them and encourage them along this new path. We were fortunate to able to see Kadyn's classroom and meet his teacher at the "meet the teacher day" on August 30 (yes, Lukah was only 4 days old) to help ease the fear/nerves. His teacher is amazing. She is so sweet and we have heard nothing but great things about her. We feel very blessed that Kadyn is in her class.

On the eve of Thursday, September 6th I set out their clothes and backpacks and made sure I had stuff to make eggs and waffles and pack their lunches. Then, after putting the bigger boys to bed I sat down to feed Lukah and half way through feeding him Kadyn came out of his room and announced that he couldn't sleep. My heart ached a little more that I couldn't scoop him up and ease whatever fear might be gnawing at him. I sent him back to bed and told him I would be right in to cuddle. However, when I went in a few minutes later he had already fallen back to sleep. Moment missed. Luckily, I got my mommy moment later in the evening...1am to be exact. He woke up again and this time I invited him to sit by me on the couch while I finished feeding Lukah. He didn't want to talk to me, but wanted to listen as I calmed his fears and was just able to be in his presence. After putting little brother down I was able to cuddle him back in his bed and soak in the moment. It was then that I realized just how much my little man is growing up but also that despite the outside influences he will be experiencing we still have a little bit more time where he will actually listen to us and want to be around us.

I did shed a few tears after I dropped the boys off at their first day. We dropped Kai off at preschool first and took the obligatory first day of school photos...to which the boys would only take a decent photo if I was in it (above). Kai had tears pool in his eyes as we said goodbye, but he held it together and sauntered off to join his class. And Kadyn? Well, he clutched his daddy's hand tightly as we walked in to his new classroom with a shyness that quickly fleeted when he saw a buddy from preschool and almost forgot to say goodbye. But as we were getting ready to leave he turned around, wrapped his arms around me and gave me a hug that I hope to remember always.

Though it has been an adjustment juggling a new baby, getting kids to and from school, and having a completely exhausted kindergartener at the end of the day, they are both doing well and both thriving. Kai asked to go to preschool an extra morning each week and has really (in just a week!) started to come in to his own with friends in class. And Kadyn has already won an award for awesome behavior, and has decided that his favorite part of the day is recess. It's not to say everything has been peachy though. Kai spends the afternoon asking when Kadyn is going to get home. But then the second we pick Kadyn up the bickering starts. The bickering when Kadyn gets home from school is two-fold...Kai is expressing some anger  towards Kadyn for deserting him (at least that is what I imagine is going on)  by digging in with the button pushing and Kadyn has been so exhausted that his emotional maturity to handle it goes out the window.  I know it will all iron itself out though. And I am so glad that I am able to be front and center a part of it.

A birth story

Lukah Kalani
"Light from the heavens"
Born August 26th at 4:20 am.
Weighing in at 8 lbs 8 ounces.
21 inches long.

It's amazing how someone so little can impact a family so significantly and in such a wonderful way that it's hard to believe he has only been here just over 2 weeks.

A birth story (This is long. Really long. If you only have time to read part of it...just read the last paragraph :)):

When I delivered Kai I was told I have (in lamons terms) a "stupid uterus." Basically, my body forgets how to give birth. Just as it did when I was pregnant with Kai, this time around my body started and stopped labor so many times I lost count. I do know that the first time it started was week 28...I was so grateful then that it didn't continue. It started again on 8/10/12...3 weeks early. Since then I basically had contractions off and on every day with some days the contractions getting as close as 3-4 minutes apart. I spent those 3 weeks waking up and wondering each morning if today was going to be the day. Sure enough however, my body kept stopping. In fact, my body, despite all the contractions, never progressed past 1.5 cm, 50% effaced. Emotionally drained from all the past 4 months brought as well as the disappointment of the past 3 weeks induction was scheduled for August 24th (5 days early since Kai was 9.8 lbs and there was concern of this little man being equally as big). The days leading up to August 24th were tough. I went through every emotion in the book...wondering how Kadyn would adjust since he'll be in kindergarten full-time, how will Kai adjust with his whole world being put upside down, how would I adjust as a mommy to 3 little boys, how would Ryan adjust in trying to start up a business and be a hands-on daddy to 3 little boys, etc. Needless to say, I was relieved when I felt a sense of peace on the eve of the 24th.

We were scheduled for a 7:30am induction. I woke up to feed the dog that morning and instead of getting back in bed for a few more minutes of sleep I was too giddy so I decided to just take a long shower instead. I missed the call saying that the nursing staff was short-handed and I was being postponed. Fortunately, just as we were getting ready to leave, I checked my phone and saw the hospital called. My heart sank. I knew what it meant. When I spoke with the charge nurse she let me know that I was being postponed but to stay ready because I would get a call in the early afternoon to hopefully get me in. However, she couldn't promise I would even be admitted that day. To say I was crushed would be an understatement. I was devastated. I felt like I had no emotion left to give. I wish I could say I spent the day lavishing my other 2 kids with my full attention, but I was too wrapped up in self pity that I could barely put one foot in front of the other. I was spent. The worst part was the waiting. I waited until early afternoon and finally called them at 2pm. The charge nurse said that she was going to try her best to get me in that evening and would call back in a couple of hours. I then waited around until 7:30 pm at which time she finally called back and said that she spoke with my Dr and they agreed that it would be best to have me go in for the induction the following morning...the 25th, at 7:30am. Ugh.

The morning of the 25th I was hesitant to get excited after the disappointment from the day before. And yet, I forced myself to get out of bed and shower. When 7:00 came and went and I hadn't received a call to cancel I allowed the excitement (which bread nervousness) to settle. This was the day.

After signing papers, getting settled in to our room (154), and changing in to the hospital gown, I was hooked up to oxytocin. This was roughly 8:15am. We were so excited. And I was sure we would have our little man well before dinner time so his anxious big brothers could meet him. The oxytocin was totally tolerable. I spent the entire morning casually reading magazines, chatting with Ryan, and responding to texts.

They checked for progress after 12 to find I was maybe 2 cm. Maybe. They broke my water roughly around 1:30pm. Though the contractions were still very tolerable the oxytocin was up as far as they felt comfortable for the time being. If I wanted an epidural they would be able to turn it up further and monitor it closely. I had them check me again...still a 2. Despite not wanting an epidural I decided to cave early opposed to waiting until midnight like I did with Kai in order to save what little energy I had left.

Dinner time came and left. I was still barely a 3. They had to put something inside me to more closely monitor to the contractions and oxytocin because they kept turning it up...my body kept doing what it does best...starting contractions and then stalling and spacing out EVEN with Oxytocin. Baby was doing just fine though. At some point my blood pressure started to drop and as a result I physically couldn't keep my eyes open. I remember our moms and my dear friend Taylor were watching The Notebook, one of my favorite movies, and I truly could not keep my eyes open. Around 10 or 11pm they checked me again...still 3 cm. They didn't want to check me again for 5 or 6 hours unless I felt pressure because, since my water was broken, they wanted to keep the risk of infection down. The nurse said she would be back around 4am.

Around 1am I started to feel pain. It was still tolerable and I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want them to tell me I was still only 3cm. I was certainly grateful Taylor was there and willing to sit beside me in the middle of the night because as the hours ticked on the pain got worse and there was no way I was going to be able to get any sleep at that point. Around 2 or 3am the pain really started to get worse. I thought it was because my epidural ran out of meds...which it did. By 3:30am I had tears with each contraction and felt a lot of pressure, but still didn't want to say anything until 4. I couldn't bear the thought of being told I had made no progress. Just before 4am my nurse came back in to check me. I was ready. Finally. We were going to meet our son.

With a flurry of activity everything was ready. The nurse had me do a practice push and immediately called for the Dr. They could see his hair! He had hair! 9 pushes later the head was out. Ouch. And he arrived on the 10th push. The Dr immediately placed him on my chest where I got to cuddle him for awhile. His screaming was beautiful. And he calmed at my voice. Between my joyous tears I was able to inspect his tiny little body. All 10 fingers. All 10 toes. Beautiful, tiny features. His ear was folded over and his eye was bruised from delivery but he was/is perfect. Shortly after delivering him I began to shake so violently that I was afraid I would drop him so I handed him off to be weighed, measured, and cuddled by Daddy and our cheering crew. An hour later the shaking subsided and I truly got to hold our boy. Birth. It is what makes the 9 months of pregnancy worth every minute. Birth. No matter what form it takes, it is amazing. Scary stories? No way. Rather, unique stories. Amazing, wonderful, beautiful, unique stories. And what a better ending? Lukah Kalani, welcome to our family. We have loved you before we conceived you and fell deeper in love the second we saw you. You fit so perfectly in to our family it is hard to imagine life before you were here. Baby boy you are loved. Birth. It's where the miracle truly happens.
