Christmas Tree Hunting

We made our annual trip to pick out and get our Christmas tree this weekend.
We crammed in to Uncle Drew's car
along with Kuna and Boulder.
The 9+ inches of snow made it the best Christmas tree searching day yet!
This marked baby Laila's very first Christmas tree hunt.

Yes, that's Daddy cutting down Nannie and Pappie's tree.
TIMBER...
The snow was too deep for us to trudge along looking for the tree so we stayed by the truck to tend to the fire with Nannie, Aunt TT and baby Laila. We made sure to invite our new friend to have chili and fudge with us.

And Kai had to try sledding on his own this year.
Patagonia model? New coat and new boots did the trick to last all day and stay "toasty warm."

Kai turns 2

November 21
All 9.8 lbs--do you SEE the size of him?
Kai Isaac
Happy Birthday sweet boy. Hard to believe that TWO years ago you joined our family. We continue to "rejoice in your laughter."

Some things I want to remember about you, Kai, at this moment:

*You are a bashful flirt. You love to give coy smiles and then bury your face into me or hide behind my legs.
*You are obsessed with your cowboy boots. Fortunately, they are a bit big still so you have some time to grow in to them.
*You adore your big brother. You LOVE to do and say everything he is.
*You have become our commentator. You repeat the last word of every sentence on TV.
*You are so happy and proud (as you should be!) of all the words you're learning. Your vocabulary grows by leaps and bounds every day.
*You use the potty when prompted, but don't make the conscious decision on your own yet.
*You've enjoyed some quality 1 on 1 time while Kadyn's been in preschool.
*You are finally getting interested in sitting through the duration of a book. I love that you always want to sit on my "yap" when we read. And, I love that you get so excited about the animals on each page that you have to shout them out to me.
*You never confused "me" and "you" like so many kids do. Everything is just "me."
*You are still our great sleeper. Though you've been waking up earlier to spend a few a minutes with me before I head to work and to watch a "movie" you're still taking 3+ hour naps.
*You love babies. You get down on the floor with them, lay on your tummy and sit and stare forever.
*You're entering the very independent stage. You want to do everything on your own. "Ah, ME!"
*You've started to put 2 words together.
*You have no fear. We are SO in trouble. T.R.O.U.B.L.E

We are doing a joint birthday party for the boys the first weekend in December. They are so excited to have a pirate birthday. And fortunately, they are so excited to have it together. Not too sure how many more birthdays we'll get away with it being joint.

Grandpa's Visit

We were so lucky to have Grandpa come visit again! We made sure to make the most of every day (except the last...that's when I had my surgery).

We took him to the High Desert Museum to see the butterflies and made sure to color a picture of butterflies when we were all done to remember them by.
And Grandpa taught me how to catch snowflakes.
We also played Uncle Anders favorite game...Chutes and Ladders. I have very similar rules to Uncle Anders when he was little.
We went to the Veteran's Day parade to thank our Veterans and to see Uncle Drew riding the 4-wheeler for Search and Rescue!
Thanks for visiting Grandpa! Hopefully next time we won't have to end your visit with a surgery. Looking forward to next time and missing you already!

Surgery Update

Wanted to post a surgery update from yesterday.

Tonsil and adenoid removal was set for 8:30 so we got there at 7:00 am for prep. Fortunately, my husband reminded me of a video the hospital gave us to show our son prior to surgery. He watched the video and we walked out the door. The video was great! If anyone ever has a child scheduled for surgery, I highly suggest you ask the hospital if they have a video showing all the steps prior to surgery (waiting room, what a Dr looks like with a mask on, what the gas mask looks like, etc.) The video, unlike his Dr, was very calming. I couldn't go with him when they took him back for surgery, but he went alone like a champ.

When the Dr arrived he said "well, as we talked about, since he isn't quite 4, we'd like to keep him overnight for observation." Um, excuse me? You DID NOT talk to me about that. The price I was quoted for this surgery DID NOT include an overnight hospital stay. You DID NOT prep me or my son for spending the remainder of the day and entire evening in the hospital. If you had, I would have brought some jammies, toiletries, some movies to watch for him, and something to do for me when he was sleeping!

He was taken back for surgery at 8:30, wheeled away in the wagon he saw in the video. That was the hardest moment as a mom...watching him be wheeled away, knowing I wouldn't be there to comfort him. But...he had his special blanket covered in kisses, we'd said our prayers, and he had a special bear his Pops brought for him. He may have been frightened, but put on his brave face.

I didn't breathe until he was out of surgery at 9:30. When the Dr came out and told me he was ok and in recovery I was able to let out the breathe I had been holding; the weight was lifted off my chest. We were told that his HUGE tonsils and HUGE adenoids were successfully removed and that based on the size of them, it was a really good thing we decided to get them out when we did. Our son slept off and on in recovery until about 11:00 at which time we were moved up to said talked about beforehand room. He did GREAT! We were told numerous times, by numerous people, that he was the model patient. Way to go little man!

He vegged in front of the tv in his room all afternoon. One thing I noted was the DVD selection the pediatrics in the hospital had was marginal and since I hadn't realized we'd be staying as long as we did, I hadn't brought any of our own. I plan to change that (anyone that lives by me that would like to donate a few videos to the hospital, let me know!).

Grandparents stopped in bringing balloons and stuffed animals (still snuggled on the couch with him even now as he's sound asleep!), and a good friend stopped in to bring him a sea of gifts to brighten his afternoon--what a blessing! especially since I hadn't brought anything with me. #AWFULPARENTAWARD

Every time he took his medicine he was gagging/dry heaving. :( So awful to watch. He fell asleep close to 9pm and (by this time my hubby brought me back some clothes and things) I snuggled in on the "comfy" couch/bed. He woke again at midnight and was screaming about not wanting his meds again. Finally forced him to take them mixed with chocolate--highly recommend--and ended up falling back to sleep just after one. His machine woke him up beeping at 6:30am. Gotta love that about hospitals.

He's doing okay today. He's pretty good for about 1 hr after taking the medicine. He'll drink a bit and talk. But after that hour, he's sullen, spits instead of swallows, and doesn't speak. We had to stay there until close to 3 today because he isn't drinking enough fluids. We're hoping being home we can change that.

What a blessed family we are!! I am so grateful for all the visitors, the love, the prayers, and the support he has/we have received and so appreciate continued prayers for a speedy recovery. Thank you!

Prayers needed!

This morning Kadyn is going to have his tonsils and adenoids removed. He has "kissing tonsils." They are so large that they touch. Though this is a common surgery, it's still surgery. We're hopeful and prayerful that this will help with his constant sicknesses, etc.

When we did the consult appointment, Kadyn had some questions he wanted me to ask the Doctor. I'm pretty sure they need to teach a bedside manners class in medical school cause his response to some of Kadyn's questions was unbelievable. Way to go.

Kadyn--Question 1: "Will it hurt"
Doctor--Answer 1: "Yes. It will afterwards for a little while but you'll get to have ice cream and smoothies." Pretty sure he didn't hear anything you said Doc after you said "yes."

Kadyn--Question 2: "Can my mommy be with me the whole time?"
Doctor--Answer 2: "No. But, you'll be asleep for a lot of the time. We have to give you special stuff to put you to sleep." Uh...pretty sure he didn't care what you said once you said "no."

Kadyn--Question 3: "Is it scary."
Doctor--Answer 3: "Some parts of it are. But you'll be asleep for those." @#)($*)#@(%*)@(#*$

And that was the pediatric specialist.

Ugh.

Mommy-RESPONSE:
Kadyn, Mommy will cover your special blanket in kisses so if you get sad you know that mommy will be with you, sending kisses your way. I will take away all your hurts with popsicles and ice cream. And the hurts I can't take away I will pray away. We can pray together. And sweet boy, God will always be with you. He can hold your hand if mommy can't be there. If you're scared, know that He's there too.

God, protect this little boy. Keep him safe in your care. Ease his fears. Take away the hurts. Be. With. Him. When. I. Can. Not. Ease MY fears (I don't even want to ask the Doctor about those). Hold my hand in the waiting room. Speak words to my heart when it's aching.

Just in time for the snow

This past Saturday we spent over 2 hours playing in the leaves in the park. It was a beautiful 65 degree day. BEAUTIFUL. You would never know it now that it's 35 out. We knew the weather would be short-lived and took advantage of the leaves in their beauty. Who would have known that we'd be playing in the newly fallen leaves in NOVEMBER? We ran in to Nana and Papa too. We had a great time throwing leaves at Papa.

Arggh...Happy Halloween!

The cutest little pirates you've ever seen. Kadyn said to me the first time "Mommy, I'm a mean pirate." We talked about how the world needs nice pirates that help other people. After that, whenever he was asked if he was a mean or a nice pirate he would reply "I'm nice" and would get really upset if some said otherwise.
We went with Canyon (Buzz Lightyear) and Sawyer (Woody). Kadyn was in 7th heaven.
And Pirate 1 and Buzz were great about letting Pirate 2 tag along.

Last year Kai stayed in the stroller the entire time. It was fun watching him make this Halloween his own by participating. He did great!
The best group shot I could get.
Happy Halloween Everyone!

We started out trick or treating in the Old Mill (local outdoor shopping center that puts on a kid's trick or treat every year). Kadyn wanted to continue the trick or treating in Grammy's neighborhood when we done. (I should add that the boys had SOO many layers of warm clothes under their costumes.) A cute story about trick or treating in Grammy's neighborhood...

Kadyn ran up a driveway ahead of us and joined a group of older kids as I was trudging up the hill carrying Kai after him. I get to the porch just in time to hear the mom that was handing out candy say to her little girl "Honey, did you even know that little boy? Or, have you been giving hugs to everyone?" And the little girl replied "That's my friend, Kadyn. We go to preschool together."
LOVE IT! He was so excited that he ran in to Alicia that as we were heading back to Grammy's house he said "Mommy, I forget to say Happy Halloween to Alicia. I want to go back and say Happy Halloween and give her one of my candies."  Awwww.
